So there I was, driving out to Ladner BC last Saturday morning, windshield wipers on full… still having trouble seeing the road. A typical day in Vancouver; overcast, grey, pouring rain, and no end in sight. In between hydroplaning and other near death experiences, I began to wonder…

Is this the kind of family that likes playing in the rain?

I had made a trip out earlier that week to scout out some locations and found this really nice trail by the marina. It was perfect. And the forecast was calling for sun on Saturday! It would be almost too easy.

As I took the exit to Ladner, that forecast seemed distant and malicious. I knew it was foolish to trust the weather report, but I dared to hope.

But lo and behold, didn’t the rain decide to stop for no more, and no less than the duration of the shoot! I couldn’t believe my good luck. We rushed off to the location for fear of getting caught in the rain, and ended up having a great time. And as I was packing my gear back into my car, the rain picked up where it left off.

Just unbelievable.

Williams, you are great people. I had an awesome time hanging out with you and taking your pictures. All the best to you and yours.

Cheers

Adam

I’m starting to realize how valuable family pictures are. Again, I think my own wedding photo’s tipped me off. There are a surprisingly large amount of ‘moments’ in life that will only happen once. And whether that moment is a kiss at a wedding, or the ‘moment’ in time that Caleb here was a baby. Life moves by so fast most of the time that its easy to forget how a year or two can feel like a moment.

I remember when one of my nephews finally had his bottle taken away from him for good. He was too old to still be using it, and it was a good and necessary thing to happen. But I remember how it was actually kind a sad moment because in a way, my sister realized that he would never be a baby again, it was over. And I was even a little sad too because he was a bloody cute baby. And even though he’s now a bloody cute toddler, the baby version of him will be missed.

Pictures help us remember.

Remember when my nephew held a bottle in one hand and his blanky in another. Remember that family reunion when my entire family made it. Remember the first time I kissed Alicia as my wife.

To be able to give someone a collection of pictures that captures these precious and fleeting moments in life just makes me happy.

So here’s Caleb the baby. Cute as a button, the way only babies are.

vivacious

one word… one family.

Vancouver rains a lot, if you don’t know. Too much really, it’s not necessary. I’ve been to Africa. Now there’s a country that needs rain. Vancouver, not so much. I hear China controls its weather. You think they’d let Africa in on that little piece of technology. Or Vancouver for that matter.

Vancouver: So… Africa, lets talk. You’ve got something we want, we’ve got something you want. What’s say we get China in on these talks to brokerage the deal. You scratch our back we scratch yours.

Africa: We want you’re rain Vancouver, we wont lye. But how do we know you’re not going to sneak shoddy TV programing, beavers, and Bryan Adams in with the deal??

Vancouver whispers nervously amongst themselves for a while until returning, stoic and poised with their answer.

Vancouver: You wont know Africa. It’s a risk you’re going to have to take.

…. to be continued

I haven’t slept much lately and my mind easily wanders. My point with all of this is that there has been one nice day in the last two weeks and I was able to capitalize on it with a rad little family shoot.

It was far out.

You’re far out.

Peace out.

Adam

ps: enjoy

After I got back from  my honeymoon I had the great pleasure of photographing the wedding of Chris and Ann. They are an awesome couple and it was just sweet to spend the day with them. They are funny, laid back, and most importantly, crazy in love with each other.

Theirs was the first wedding I have shot (or been too for that matter) since my own. It was interesting how my perspective for shooting a wedding changed after getting married myself. I think I gained a better appreciation for what that day really means in a couples life. It really is a privilege to be the one asked to capture the mood, the moments, and the memories of the most important day in a couples lives.

Chris and Ann, you are wonderful people and I wish you all the best. I know you will be an inspiration to the people around you.

Listen always, Laugh often, and Love each other with everything you’ve got. God Bless you guys!!

Adam

two things I am ashamed of since I’ve gotten married.

One, I’ve already confessed: reading the Twilight series… and most recently watching the movie, which of course was a let down. The vampires weren’t hot enough, and the flash back sequences looked like they were produced by a grade 10 film and television class. Actually, they probably would have done better. Those were laugh-out-loud moments for me in the movie.

Two, which I’ve yet to confess, Alicia and I have fallen hook, line, and sinker for Battlestar Galactica.

Saying that still sounds so wrong…

I have a friend thats been a huge BSG fan for years, and i have subsequently mocked him ruthlessly for this. Interestingly enough, it was just this last summer that I ended up watching the series finally with him and thought it wasn’t half bad. Then Alicia and I got season 1 for a wedding present and the rest is history. So if you were like me and thought this show was lame, put your pride on the back-burner for a couple episodes and get hooked. Besides, it was all shot in Vancouver, which is always fun.

So my sister introduced Alicia to Twilight, who introduced it to me. My old pastor introduced me to Battlestar Galactica. Do you ever notice how your friends and family have a way of turning you on to stuff you might otherwise never give the time of day to? I’m even just remembering how it was my buddy Mike who convinced me I had to listen to some ‘Country Singer’ called Ryan Adams. I hate country music and thought he was crazy. Of course, Ryan Adams is not an ordinary country singers, and I would now say he’s probably my favorite music artist.

Friends and Family have such a strong influence in our lives. We dont always see it, but it is certainly there. Like when we start talking like our friends, listening to the music our parents played when we were growing up, or being the last one to buy Crocs cause you finally see just how comfortable and stylish they are (that one’s still not hit me yet by the way, but I did just buy an iPhone which is kind of similar).

With this in mind, I did something different at the wedding I blogged about yesterday. I think I saw this idea somewhere else, but I’ve tried to put my own spin on it. I think you might call this a ‘Party Wall’, so that’s what I’ve been calling it. Anyway, it was probably one of the funnest things I’ve even done at a wedding (asides from my own but that’s non of your damn business!).

It’s just simply etching out a corner at your venue, setting up a couple lights, and spreading the word. The guests had an absolute blast, and so did I. Props were totally improved, and someone even brought some sort of masquerade mask, which was a hit.

Anyway, I’m going to try to convince the ‘Schram’s’ to print a 24×24 of this. This is a picture of their friends and family. The people who they love, and are loved by. It’s an overview of the joy and celebration of their wedding day.

And I love it.

See if you can spot the photographer…

This summer I had the absolute joy of shooting the wedding of a couple close friends of mine, Alan and Ashley. They tied the knot almost exactly one month before Alicia and I did.

Funny story…

Alan also proposed to Ashley almost exactly one month before I proposed to Alicia. Coincidence? Not really. I think my internal reaction when Alan told me his plan was, “Come on! Really??” Now this had nothing to do with me disapproving of their beautiful and holy union, and everything to do with me finally realizing that it was now defiantly time for me to let out my pig tails, hike up my skirt and follow suit!

The truth is that Alan inspired me. I saw how he and Ashley were really two pieces of the same puzzle. How they each represented each others hopes and dreams, needs and wants. And where one was weak, the other was strong. There was real romance to their love, and it was matched by depth and honesty. I saw all this in my friends, and realized I saw it in Alicia and I as well. So thanks for helping me man up guys!

So their wedding was amazing.

And I’m really not just saying that. It was at some camp on Vancouver Island (who can remember which one??) which had this gorgeous heritage home that backed up on an apple orchard overlooking the ocean. Stunning. It was raining in the morning, which had everyone on edge. But moments before the outdoor ceremony got under way, as if planned by God all along, the rain stopped and the clouds began to clear into a beautiful, sunny day.

Highlight: Arm wrestling the brides mother after some escalating trash talk.

I lost.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I’ll stop now.

So if you will all raise your glass with me…

“To my favorite Batista… and my personal financial planner…

To an inspiration of love, life, laughter…

To new life.

The Bride and Groom.”

I feel like a crazy person. Kind of like when you were a kid and you ran faster than your legs could take you and you ended up arse over tea kettle?

Ya. That’s me and life right now.

T-minus 10 days till wedding. Being married doesn’t really make me nervous. Getting married on the other hand…

We were going to have a big wedding, but we’ve dwindled it down to a medium at best. Actually, our guest have dwindled it down, which is bitter sweet. We’re sad some of our friends and loved ones can’t make it… but the truth is, our venue can really only hold 172… we invited 200.

Bold.

But we’re down to about a buck forty, which isn’t bad.

In related news, I have become a youtube sensation. We all knew it was coming, we didn’t know it would be like this. Please enjoy me egging a swan and a little dog on to fight to the death.

Love Always

Adam

it should be a crime for work to be this fun! the other day I got to shoot the wedding of Randi and Sean on top of Grouse Mountain, and I couldn’t of asked for a better evening of photography, debauchery, and love.

Photography highlight: Jokingly suggesting the bride and groom run through the industrial sprinklers… they didn’t get the joke. Mud and and grass stains everywhere!

Wedding Highlight: Music choice. The Office theme song coming down the isle, and the Darth Vader theme song walking out. Brilliant.

Anyway, thanks for being so amazing Randi and Sean, I had such a great time! Here’s a little preview of the shoot.

Adam

ps: Expect to see more weddings soon.

a few weeks ago I shot and engagement shoot for the lovely couple you see below. this was actually round two for the shoot, we had been rained out on our last attempt. but when we finally got out, it was a gorgeous day in vancouver! They are an AMAZING couple, and I had a blast shooting them. I’m looking forward to shooting their wedding in the fall. I’ll be fresh off my own honeymoon in Greece, where I’m sure I’ll have been shooting non-stop for 3 weeks strait!

speaking of shooting, I have a CRAZY week.

3 weddings… one is on the island

pray for me

But it should be fun. They are great couples I’ll be shooting for in really fun locations. Plus, I’ll finally be able to get some sweet wedding shots in my portfolio.

Speaking of which… I need to go do some scouting in Fort Langley. Stay Classy Blog World

Love,

Adam

Hey Jude, don't make it bad
take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And anytime you feel the pain
Hey Jude refrain
don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool
who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
